Newton wide receiver, Deandre Huff, seems to be slowly changing the team’s standards of winning these days. Going into the 2014 season, the Rams program totaled an all-time winning percentage of 44 percent. The 6-foot-1 junior helped Newton exceed that mark as the team finished 7-4 this season on its way to reaching the Class AAAAAA state quarterfinals, the programs deepest playoff run since 1987. The Rams progressed all the way to the quarterfinals before being knocked off by Etowah in a 43-29 loss. The season leading up to this final game for Huff and the Rams was unique as they only played 11 games. The reduction in contests over the season is the result of two games being canceled due to inclement weather. Even through the lack of games, Huff was able to put together a strong season, recording a team-high of 44 receptions for 933 yards along with 11 touchdowns. His statistics of the season are vastly greater in comparison to last season as a sophomore, having run for 194 yards and finished with 282 yards receiving and 7 scores. Huff, who primarily plays offense, was utilized at defensive back for the first time during their opening contest in the state playoffs against top ten-ranked Valdosta. He did not disappoint. With everything riding on this crucial playoff game, Huff picked off two passes, one of which was returned for a score, and recorded a sack in the game. He also added three catches for 60 yards and a touchdown. His ability to make plays on both sides of the ball helped to advance the Rams into the second round of the playoffs for the first time since 1987. Huff has received interest from Georgia Tech, Auburn, Clemson, Ohio State, and South Carolina. He is considered one of the quicker wide receivers in the state, having run a 4.45-second 40 yard dash. Assistant Coach Grant says that Huff is a game changer, due to his strong work ethic which enables him to get the most out of his abilities. People following Huff would not be surprised to see a spectacular season to cap off his high school career.
