Player Bio

Lorenzo Smothers is a dynamic all-purpose back from Marion County whose speed and versatility has allowed him to be a force to be reckoned wherever he is slotted. While he is considered small in stature, 5-foot-8 while weighing 165 pounds, his 4.4 speed separates him from the pack as a playmaking threat at running back, strong safety, and in the return game. While relatively in known on the recruiting scene, Eagles opponents have had a great look over the past three years of Smothers’ capabilities.

As a sophomore, the Marion County standout recorded 57 tackles and picked off six passes defensively, but it was on offense where his impact was truly made. He rushed for 594 yards while catching 36 passes for 475 yards and 11 total touchdowns as the Eagles won its first state championship in school history. His strong play resulted in the scat-back being named to the All-State team while also being named All-Region Defensive Player of the Year.

2014 proved to be even better as Smothers led Marion County to its second-straight semifinals appearance. He rushed for 862 yards while gaining 825 yards receiving on way for 30 total touchdowns. For the season, he recorded a team-high 2,164 all-purpose yards. Defensively, Smothers recorded 47 tackles along with four interceptions. That type of production has had the likes of Georgia Southern, Auburn, and Georgia all display interest in the junior.

His dynamic play is shown on the hardwood as well. As the starting point guard for the Eagles, Smothers has played a large part in leading Marion County to back-to-back trips to the state playoffs while averaging double-digit points for his varsity career. Aside from his athletic prowess, the junior frequently volunteers at a local recreation department where he coaches little kids in football and basketball. Smothers currently carries a 3.3 grade-point average and currently plans on becoming a coach after college. For now, Smothers future looks focused on the gridiron where his speed and playmaking ability figures to carry over at the college level.
